PET FRIENDLY SHELTER
Currently only one emergency shelter is in existence in Broward County and has limited capacity. Broward County residents in an emergency evacuation zone who would like to pre-register for the pet friendly shelter can do so in person at the Humane Society of Broward County, beginning June 2, 2008 Monday-Friday between the hours of 9:00am-5:00pm. Special weekend appointments can be scheduled.

Space is limited and is on a first come, first serve basis to those living in a designated emergency evacuation zone, which includes all mobile home parks.

If you wish to pre-register for the pet friendly shelter, please bring the below items with you to the Humane Society when you pre-register:  

• Valid proof of residence in an evacuation zone such as an electric, water or cable bill.  A driver's license will not be
sufficient proof.
• Valid proof of rabies vaccination and license tag for your pets.
• The name, address and phone number of your veterinarian.
• A current photo of the pets you are planning to bring to the shelter (photo's will not be returned as they will be

attached to your registration).

Criteria to be allowed into the pet friendly shelter are:
• Pet owners must be able to provide proof that they live in an evacuation area (utility bill).
• Pets must be up-to-date on rabies vaccination and licensing.
• Pets must be crated and will be housed in the same area as other pets.
• Pet owners must stay at the emergency shelter and by appointment only, provide care for their animals

(i.e., walking, feeding, cleaning up after).
• Pet owners will not be allowed to sleep or stay in the room where their animals are housed.

If you go to a Red Cross shelter, plan to take:
• Flashlight
• Extra batteries
• Medicine
• Snacks
• Baby food
• Diapers
• Blankets or sleeping bags
• Cot and pillows
• Identification
• Photocopies of valuable papers
• Playing cards
• Games
• Books
• Eyeglasses
• Hearing aids
• Dentures
• Special-diet foods
• Toiletries
• First-aid kit

Contact the Humane Society of Broward County at 954.989.3977, early during hurricane season to determine if any space is still available.

OTHER COUNTY PET FRIENDLY SHELTERS
Palm Beach County provides a pet friendly shelter at the West Boynton Recreation Center.  Pre-registration is required by calling 561.233.1266

The Peggy Adams Animal Rescue League in West Palm Beach has space available.  Pre-registration is required by calling 561.472.8874

Miami-Dade County provides pet friendly shelters at the Sunshine Pavilion at the CountyFairground and at Highland Oaks Middle School in North Miami Beach.  Pre-registration is required by calling the Miami Date Animal Services Department.  Residents may call 311
