Oscar, Our
Featherless Friend
Oscar in 2004 Oscar is the unofficial mascot of the shelter’s clinic where she is kept amused by the staff and volunteers. Her day begins around 7 AM when the cover is removed from her large cage and she is greeted by the animal care staff. She gets her breakfast which consists of bird food and fresh fruits, then snacks all day on whatever other goodies the staff and volunteers share with her. Some of her favorite things are hash browns, cottage cheese with fruit, blueberry pancakes, pasta, pizza, and egg rolls, but she has a real sweet tooth and loves lollipops. She can be very demanding at times and if someone is not paying attention to her, she squawks loudly for everyone to hear. Oscar is very fond of several staff and volunteers and gets extremely excited when she sees them. She will climb down her cage and waddle down the hallway just to be with them. Oscar is not available for adoption; she has her forever home at the Humane Society of Broward County. Nearly twelve years ago the Humane Society of Broward County was asked by a local wildlife center to take in a cockatoo they had confiscated. The bird has a very contagious disease known as beak and feather and at the time we were told the flightless bird would live only six months. Because our shelter does not handle birds, we decided that Oscar could live out her remaining life with us. The disease is not contagious to people or dogs or cats, just birds. Well, twelve years later, she is doing quite well despite the fact she is missing her feathers.
