South Florida was fortunate not to feel the wrath of Hurricane Irene; however an animal shelter in Puerto Rico was not so lucky. Save a Sato, located in San Juan, has been operating a small shelter for the past 25 years. The group rescues dogs on the island and after cleaning them up and giving them necessary vaccinations, the shelter works with organizations in the United States to find homes for the dogs. The Humane Society of Broward County has worked with this dedicated group over the years. Due to the extensive damage the shelter received from flooding and wind, Save a Sato sent 47 dogs to the Humane Society of Broward County on Tuesday, August 30.

The dogs were flown on a cargo plane to Miami International Airport and then transported back to the shelter. Overall the dogs look to be in good shape, just a bit tired. After some needed rest the dogs will be checked by our clinic staff on Wednesday. We hope to have them available by the afternoon for adoption.

If you are interested in adopting please stop by the shelter. Adoption hours are Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.; Wednesday 10 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. and Sunday 10 a.m. – 5:30 p.m.

If you can’t adopt, but would like to help, the shelter is always in need of toys, treats, towels, and paper towels.
