Walk for The Animals

Fort Lauderdale , FL Over 4,500 fellow animal lovers and dogs recently participated in the Humane Society of Broward County’s “18 th Annual Walk for the Animals ” presented by VCA Animal Hospitals. The event, chaired by Karen Abeleda and Megan Weber, both of Comcast, took place on Saturday, March 1st at Esplanade Park .   Walkers began to gather at 8 A.M. to turn in money they had collected and then strolled around the park to enjoy complimentary pancakes from IHOP and water and fruit courtesy of Whole Foods Market.  More than a dozen sponsor booths provided giveaways to participants and for those dogs with special talents they were able to participate in the “Look at what my dog can do contest!” hosted by Daniel Ratte.  While some dogs sniffed and played, others enjoyed pet massages from Hope LaMonica, pet reiki from Lisa Shaw and some were even blessed by Father Joe.  The enthusiastic crowd was entertained by lively performances from Bob Avery and Josef Marc, DJ Retro and the ever-so-talented Hip Hop Kidz.  For the younger participants a bounce house was a hit donated by Happy and Grumpy Entertainment.

Local 10’s Jacey Birch was present for a live weather broadcast, while BIG105.9’s Jen Wylde emceed the event from the stage.  The 1.25 mile walk through downtown Fort Lauderdale began promptly at 10:00 a.m. when the official “Walk” pace car provided by Ed Morse Sawgrass Auto Mall passed through the balloon archway. Mascot passengers were Sebastian, the Miami Hurricane’s Ibis, FAU Owl and Miami Dolphins TD.  Thousands of HSBC supporters, including Ron Jon Surf Shop’s Surf Cruiser and Stanley C. Panther, followed close behind, and as they

visited one of the water stops to cool off they were serenaded by Mitchell Herrick who played guitar.

The individual top fundraiser was Angela Chrysler of Fort Lauderdale who raised $14,191.45, second place went to Jan Joyce of Fort Lauderdale who raised $9,090 and third place was Evan Helfman of Parkland who raised $5,020.  The “Pack” (team) raising the most funds was PAWS whose team members raised $30,048 and the second place “Pack” was Pet Therapy Companions that raised $20,786.23. For the fourth year walkers were able to create their own fundraising web page to solicit their friends and family for support.  Five hundred and sixty five people took advantage of this and over $193,000 was raised on-line.

Thanks to our generous sponsors!
